How does Gaelic sports connect with theatre, you might ask? Well, Corrib IS a cultural org in addition to an artistic org. That said, one of the playwriting residency applications this year was from playwright Cáit Moloney, who is a native of Oola, County Limerick, and was recently hired as the new Artistic Director for the GAFF theatre in Limerick, Ireland! She applied to write a play about a camogie team, to interview real camogie players and highlight the Irish sport and the women beneath the helmets.

Columbia Red Branch members connected with Corrib at an Irish network meeting, and expressed so much interest in a theatre piece highlighting this sport that is near and dear to them, that they are goaling to community fundraise the amount needed to sponsor a commission of Cáit’s play for Corrib to produce in a future season, separate from Corrib’s current playwriting residency!

If CRB and folks in our Irish community express enough interest, and the $3,500 is raised in the next couple of months, we’ll green light the next steps, which would include a world premiere of the play here in Portland! Supporting Irish playwrights, listening to what the community is interested in, and expanding cultural education are all things that Corrib cares deeply about.
